Thomas Rhett music analysis
American country music singer Thomas Rhett has had a lot of success since his debut album, “It Goes Like This” came out in 2013. Within just his first two albums, he has had seven #1 hits on the Country Airplay charts and he received his first Grammy nomination this year. His third album is scheduled for release later in 2017.
As the son of famous country singer Rhett Atkins, he grew up spending a lot of time around his role models such as Tim McGraw, but things really took off for him when he started attending college in Nashville. While he was playing music one night at a local club, an executive from Big Machine Label Group approached him and offered him a songwriting publishing deal.
After dropping out of college in 2010 to pursue music, he wrote songs for other country artists such as Jason Aldean and Florida Georgia Line before releasing his own debut single, “Something To Do With My Hands” in 2012. Later came the thomas rhett 2014 tour. His debut full-length album came out the following year.
According to an interview Rhett did with Forbes in February, he is now on a mission to help redefine the country music genre. At 27 years old, he and other young country musicians are aiming to change the perception that country music is a conservative genre defined by a blue collar lifestyle and traditional cowboy clothing, “I want people to understand that we are hip,” he said in the interview.
For example, Rhett chooses to wear sneakers on stage instead of cowboy boots because they are more comfortable and easier for him to dance in. This is stark contrast from the heavy and stiff cowboy boots and hat his father always wore on stage. He emphasizes the importance of being true to himself and what he likes. An unexpected goal of his is to become the first country singer to get an Adidas sneaker contract.
He listens to all types of music. Some of his favorite musicians are Bruno Mars, Chance the Rapper, Ariana Grande, Drake and Katy Perry. Working with Bruno Mars is one of his dream collaborations. He even attempted to play in a punk rock band before making the switch to country.
As a fan of many different styles of music, Rhett embraces the idea of incorporating influences from other genres into his music. For his latest single “Craving You,” which is a duet with fellow country singer Maren Morris, he hired the same engineer who has mixed tracks for Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez to give it more of a pop vibe.
Despite Rhett’s monumental early success, he does not feel a lot of pressure. He really tries to not overthink it. “I’m not worried about writing anything with an agenda today,” he said in an interview with GQ.
He looks up to Taylor Swift as a prime example of success when crossing over into pop music. He loves that even though she has sold out numerous arena shows, she is always trying something new and always pushing herself farther.
2017 should continue to be a successful year for Thomas Rhett and his music. It could make for an interesting analysis if he accomplishes all of his goals.
